Madoka Mayuzumi, Japan’s leading haiku poet and winner of the Kadokawa Haiku Prize and Yamamoto Kenkichi Literature Prize, has toured the areas of Japan devastated in 2011 by the earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear reactor meltdowns, interviewed many of the survivors, and gathered their haiku, which she offers here, with commentary, as a tribute to the spirit of survival of these tenacious folk.

A l’automne, les fleurs des champs paraissent d’autant plus belles que l’on songe déjà à l’hiver, tout comme le soleil paraît d’un éclat plus magnifique encore au moment où il va disparaître à l’horizon. Telles sont les réflexions que je me suis faites en me promenant dans cet immense pré fleuri, où je ne distinguais ni entrée ni sortie. J’avais l’impression qu’il se poursuivait à l’infini.
